Hill finishes in the top 20 at State
Elsberry sophomore Gavin Hill represented his school and community May 19-20 at the State Golf Meet held at River Cut Golf Course in Springfield.
“It was like playing in a tournament for the Junior PGA,” said Hill. “It’s a totally different situation. You’re playing against kids that share your skill level and have the ability to hit the ball well and put up low scores.”
Hill finished in 20th place.
“I didn’t give my best performance but I tried and it was a good experience,” said Hill.
Elsberry’s Head Golf Coach Ryan Parker said he thought Hill was probably being too hard on himself.
“In his opinion he probably didn’t play very well but he is a very good golfer,” said Parker. “He played really well on the back nine and shot an 83 which put him in 11th place overall after the first day. I think he ended up just putting a lot of pressure on himself because he really struggled the second day and didn’t have control. He was making good contact but he didn’t have the ability to execute all of his shots. He didn’t make bad shots. He just wasn’t able to control where the ball was going.”
Parker said his advice to Gavin heading into the future is to avoid the temptation to over think things.
“He needs to just let his natural ability take over,” said Parker.
