Cleveland and Miller qualify for state
Members of the Elsberry R-II Track and Field Teams competed in the Sectional Meet at Principia High School on May 17.
For the girls, Madison Cleveland placed third in the discus competition with a throw of 96-10, Naomi Gladney finished seventh in the 1600-meter run with a final time of 6:07.34 and Passion Hunter-Edwards placed seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.92.
For the boys, Ethan Miller finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.27.
Elsberry’s team placed 15th in the women’s division with a group ranking of 14, while the boys finished in 24th place with a team ranking of 5.
Miller will be representing Elsberry in the open 400 at the State track meet in Jefferson City this weekend.
Cleveland will be competing in the discus competition at that same event.
“Ethan has a good chance to be in the top eight,” said Head Coach Scott Cleveland. “There are a couple of other boys who are just incredibly fast but Ethan should finish right up there with them and he should medal hopefully.”
Cleveland said that Miller and Cleveland have shown improvement in their running and throwing all year.
“A lot of other kids also showed improvement during the year,” said Cleveland. “Unfortunately, they just fell a little short and were unable to make it out of Sectionals and into State.”
