Lady Indians fall to Canton at Districts
Anne Marie Bufford battles with a Canton player for possession during Districts on Monday.
The Elsberry Lady Indians Soccer Team ended its season on May 19 with a 2-1 loss to Canton during the first round of the District Tournament hosted by Christian High School.
Head Coach Hector Bencomo said that he and his team were very familiar with Canton due to the fact that they had faced them earlier in the regular season and they knew going in that they were facing a tough team.
After failing to score a goal during the 2013 soccer season, the Lady Indians were determined to at least put some points on the board in 2014.
Not only did they accomplish that goal early on in the season, but Canton was one of the teams that they did it against.
Bencomo said that this gave him a confident feeling going into the District game.
The contest was evenly matched from the very start and remained tied at 0-0 until late in the first half with neither team willing to back down defensively.
Canton rallied prior to halftime to head into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Undeterred, the Lady Indians emerged in the second half to close the gap to 2-1 when Jamie Cowling launched a Hail Mary from mid-field that soared over the head of Canton’s goalie.
That was as close as Elsberry would get, however.
Despite numerous opportunities for the Lady Indians to at least tie the score and send the game into overtime, Canton managed to dodge the threat and hang on to advance in the tournament, ending Elsberry’s hopes for a win this season.
