For six years now, students at Elsberry High School have had the chance to experience the exciting world of marine biology courtesy of the World Aquarium Aquatic and Marine Science Institute, otherwise known as ‘WAAMSI’.
“Essentially it’s a program that was designed to offer kids in the Midwest the opportunity to study marine biology,” said Elsberry Science Teacher Kenna Heitman. “The program was originally intended for schools in the inner city, but when I came on board I decided I wanted my students to have this opportunity as well. I asked them to sort of open things up a little bit and now kids from areas like Defiance and Wentzville take part in the program on a regular basis. Elsberry is still probably the smallest school to participate.”
