Barber to compete in Drum Corp for second straight year
Elsberry High School senior Zachary Barber competing with the Madison Scouts in the summer of 2013 at DCI World Championships at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.
This summer Zachary Barber, a senior at Elsberry High School, will be competing in an activity known as Drum Corp for the second year in a row.
“Drum Corp is kind of like a marching band, but at a much higher level,” said Barber. “Kids from all over the country can audition and the average age is 19-20. I was one of the youngest kids in the corp. I had to travel to Indiana last year to compete for my spot. There are 144 spots in the group itself, but only 40 of those are color guard spots.”
Last summer, Barber marched with a group known as the Madison Scouts.
“There are maybe 12-15 world-class corps,” said Barber. “The Madison Scouts is the number 10 corp.”
The opportunity to perform with a group of such high standing is one that most students Barber’s age wouldn’t even dare to dream of.
“It was a pretty big deal for someone of my age and background to be able to do something like this,” said Barber. “Most kids who participate are already in college before they even audition.”
Like a lot of other honors, this one came with awesome responsibility.
