Elsberry Indian Kenny Lesley finishes off one of his two dunks during the 68-36 win over Wellsville last Friday night.

Despite an 8-3 overall record, the Elsberry Indians Basketball season so far has been like a roller coaster ride.

And coming off of Christmas break Head Coach Ryan Parker wasn’t sure what team would show up.

“That first game after break sometimes you don’t know what to expect,” said Parker.

What Parker got, was a team that put up 15 points in the first and another 25 points in the second outscoring the Wellsville Tigers 35-20.

The Indians hot start came at the hands of quality shots from Rodney Chatman (5 points); Rahiem Porter (7 points); Kenny Lesley (14 points) and Dylan Howard (4 points).

“I thought we did some really good things and we are really getting better,” said Parker.

One stat Parker looks closely at is taking care of the ball and not giving up turnovers. Elsberry only coughed the ball up eight times against Wellsville.

“We took care of the ball and when you do that you give yourself a great chance of coming out on top,” said Parker.

The second half was much of the same for Elsberry as they outscored the Tigers 14-6 in the third quarter and 14-10 in the fourth quarter.

Zach Rimel led the Indians offensively in the second half scoring eight of his 10 points on the night. The performance meant that Rimel would be the Peoples Bank and Trust Player of the Game and was interviewed after the game on the Indian Sports Network broadcast.

The new year marks a tough stretch of competition for the Indians and Parker is ready for it.

“We have some tough competition on our schedule and also the Bowling Green Tournament. Winfield, Friday is a big time rival and is always a big game for both programs,” said Parker. “As the season progresses our young kids are becoming more experienced and I think that is going to be huge for us.”
